Irish Probation Journal Volume 22 - Women and the Criminal Justice System: Gender Matters

This article is based upon the 17th annual Martin Tansey Memorial Lecture and draws upon a long history of research with women who come into conflict with the law, who engage with the criminal justice system as victims, offenders or both.

In keeping with Martin Tansey’s life’s work and the values he promoted that underpin independent criminal justice research, I highlight the importance of interdisciplinarity, participatory and creative methods for centring the voices of women and, thus, facilitating pathways to better knowledge and understanding, education, reintegration and social justice.

In doing so, I call for more participatory and creative research from our research institutions that seek to make a difference not only by facilitating space for women’s voices but by listening, paying attention to and working with criminal justice involved women towards transformative social change and justice for women.
