Life as a member of Communications

Graphic with blues, greens and yellows background and a Communications quote saying "It’s a privilege to work for Probation in the Communications Unit as it comes with a lot of job satisfaction. I work in a dedicated team where no one day is the same, with lots of internal and external communication opportunities to support our frontline probation staff."

As a member of staff working in communications, your work can vary widely from one day to the next. You will work in a dynamic team covering a variety of responsibilities and your role is to implement the organisational communications and engagement strategy.

You will have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and enjoy the opportunity to use a story telling approach which raises awareness of the role of probation.

You will work  on internal communications and engagement issues such as organising our virtual town hall events, staff engagement forum, producing our internal newsletter ‘Probation News’ and managing our intranet. We pride ourselves on keeping staff up to date with management decisions and explaining what is going on in the wider organisation so that all our people feel valued and included.

We also have an external communications role which includes responding to media enquiries, proactively placing news stories which raise awareness of our work in the media and managing our external website. We provide a range of social media channels and on any given day we use our platforms which include X, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to tell stories about the life of probation staff and the impact they make which ultimately raises awareness and confidence in the work of probation.

We are also responsible for stakeholder engagement and public affairs and that means coordinating assembly questions, writing speeches for the Chief Executive and senior staff , and preparing briefings.  We also set up stakeholder engagement events, conferences and seminars. We are responsible for the annual publication of the Irish Probation Journal in partnership with our colleagues in the Probation Service in Ireland.

The team also organise a number of other events across the calendar, both internal for staff and external for partners and stakeholders.

Everything you do on a day-to-day basis is about raising awareness and confidence in the work of PBNI.
