PBNI in Prisons

The Probation Board has staff who work in all three prison establishments in Northern Ireland – Maghaberry, Magilligan, Hydebank Wood and Young Offenders Centre. Within probation there is an Assistant Director Prisons who is responsible for liasing with and supervising probation area managers who are based in the three prisons and ensuring PBNI aims and objectives are achieved. The Assistant Director would also have regular meetings with senior management within the Northern Ireland Prison Service.

PBNI works in close contact with the Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS) through an overarching management framework agreement (the most recent version of which was signed on 30 July 2010) and Service Level Agreements in each of three prisons. The NIPS and PBNI use the Service Level Agreements (SLAs) agreed between Governors and PBNI as the basis for the provision of PBNI services to NIPS. The key business areas identified in SLAs are: Public Protection, Risk Assessment, Case Management (which includes committal interviews, induction, sentence planning, reviews, services to vulnerable prisoners and those at risk of suicide or self harm), Programme Delivery, Parole Review, Release and Licencing and Life Sentenced Prisoners.

A mandatory function of the Probation Board is to provide probation officers to perform social welfare duties in prisons and young offenders centres.
