Car Crime Project makes an IMPACT

Car Crime Project makes an IMPACT
IMPACT (Inclusive Model of Partnership Against Car Theft) is a multi agency project set up in 2001 as a result of demands from the community to the Probation Board for Northern Ireland to address the issue of car crime in West Belfast.
February sees the release of a 3 year independent evaluation of IMPACT which states that; ‘IMPACT has made a significant contribution’ to the fact that the level of car crime in West Belfast has fallen dramatically in the past 3 years:
  • The level of unauthorised takings of vehicles has fallen by 92%
  • The level of stolen vehicles recovered in West Belfast is down by 47%
Car Crime IMPACT PartnersThe evaluation, conducted by Research & Evaluation Services, covers the period October 2001 – March 2004 and concludes that; ‘the project has contributed to the creation of a safer society through the reduction in car crime-related casualties’.
IMPACT works on 3 levels:
  1. Education and Prevention Programmes in primary and secondary schools and youth clubs.
  2. Preventative and diversionary programmes of work targeted at those vulnerable to involvement in car theft activity.
  3. Intensive supervision of the most persistent offenders engaged in car crime to reduce their offending behaviour.
The IMPACT Project won the Aisling Award for community endeavour in December 2003 and in January 2004, the project won the ‘public protection’ category at the International Community Justice Awards in London.
If you would like a copy of the evaluation please contact Paul Millar, IMPACT Operational Manager, on 028 90627321.  For more information visit the website on www.theimpactproject.org.uk.
