The Probation Board for Northern Ireland is a community-based Board with the status of a Non-Departmental Public Body.
It has a number of functions which are laid down in legislation
- to carry out assessments and provide reports to Courts which are designed to make a contribution to the decisions which Magistrates and Judges make in relation to sentencing
- to supervise offenders in the community
- and to have staff who work in prisons providing a range of services.
We are permitted to fund organisations that provide hostels for offenders, and run various projects in the community, which address the offending behaviour of offenders who are under PBNI supervision.
Purpose
Protect the public by working with the Courts, other Agencies and Partners to reduce re-offending and integrate offenders successfully back into the Community.
Aim
To help reduce crime and the harm it does.
Vision
Achieve excellence in the assessment and management of offenders.
